Week 5

These are the notes I used for when I was presenting infant of the class during the week 6 studio. I decided to make notes and prepare my presentation as this will make sure I cover what I intend to as well as keep within the presentation timeframe.

Week 5

This is my first moodbaord in comparison to my final object. The textures and patterns from the leaves, trees, bark and roots are all reflected in my voronoi design which was constructed using the 3D printer. The fine- detail on the laser cut objects was developed with this also as the initial inspiration. My ongoing development of moodbaords have determined the construction techniques.

Reflection; 

Overall I am happy with my final outcome. I was taught and used a range of digital fabrication tools which I gained knowledge and an understanding on what I needed to achieve and was actually able to achieve this through these varied use of softwears. My work development and process consisted of a lot of iterative development through my digital designs and through physical fabrication as I was able to design a component/ object, reflect on it and see what did and didn’t work then re-develop it again. I had to independently enquire to further develop my work.

This was my final object I developed after previously testing a variety of testing processes, I found this design structurally was sound as well as aesthetically pleasing towards the purpose.

Reflecting on the past 6 weeks I found this class really easy to engage with and develop concepts and ideas. I am happy with my final outcome based on the developments and refinements I have been through. I am happy with the way this paper introduced the digital fabrications individually then combined them at the end as this was a good way to learn the soft wears individually, as I hadn’t used them before. I am happy with the material choices I used for my final object and as I think they worked the best for my required purpose. I really enjoyed this 6 weeks and can’t wait to start the next assignment.

Week 5

I am very pleased to say this is my final object which is constructed with the foundations of the theme based from my nature/ organic moodbaord from week 1 and has beed designed physically based on my subject area of choice (Industrial Design). My final objet functions as a ring support brace which has the initial intention to support the finger when arthritis is occurred, however through testing, trialling, refinements, reevaluating and rethinking my design concepts from this initial idea I was able to adjust it to what outcomes I wished to achieve with the Laser cutter and 3D printer. This is because I really wanted to manipulate the 3D printer to create this voronoi design which I think shows the nature and organic features from my initial moodboard. With the laser cutter I did my developments based on the aesthetic quality of the material used, as I chose clear acrylic and used this to my advantage by including various ‘carvings’ throughout the design. I chose the images within my carving to be of naturalistic purpose such as the trees, grass, birds and rose flower which each represent nature, supporting my voronoi 3D print design. The Rose and Tree carve (as shown in the images below) slot under the acrylic brace which is used to hold the 3D printed parts in place. As well as this slotting together I have used this to my aesthetic advantage as it visually represents my moodbaord and having these small details such as the birds and grass in the support brace makes this relate to my initial development.

I used both Reductive and Adductive methods of fabrication to create this object. If I wasn’t to use digital fabrication to create this object then I wouldn’t be able to produce it using traditional means. This is because the voronoi pattern can only be created by using the 3D printer and isn’t something you can develop using traditional means while my laser cut objects/ components also wouldn’t be able to be produced by traditional means due to it being a intricate design with the birds, grass, trees and rose being fine detail on a very small surface area. I think that my final design pushed the machines to their limits not purely based on the complexity of the voronoi design of the fine carved detail on the laser cutter but because of the trials and tests I did in-order to get to where I am with my final. My concepts ranged widely which allowed me to test a large range of ideas and see what these machines were capable of doing while pushing them to their core limits. My small detailed, abstract form was created based on these experiments from week 1 to now which allowed me to design, create, reflect, refine and then design again and keep this cycle going until I was able to manipulate the digital fabrication methods into producing what I required while it being within my design discipline of Industrial Design where I created an object with the Industrial focus on ergonomics where I was able to express the advantages of digital fabrication throughout. Through the development phase I was able to reflect, refine and design my ideas and concepts through the ongoing process of moodboard inspiration which I completed weekly, allowing me to show where my mind set is as well as how I could develop a next trial.

This was my final print with the voronoi design which represents the naturalistic/ organic features which where inspired from my first moodboard from week 1. I have taken the features from this moodbaord and incorporated it into my final design. I used the ‘reductive’ approach when designing this file as I originally made this file as a solid one component then imported it into MeshMixer and created the voronoi pattern which then resulted in it to remove parts of the material to create this reductive implication. This design is also ‘adductive’ as I built up layers to make this object which is when the 3D printer is printing and it prints in layers (which can be shown how this occurs when on Cura and select the ‘layers’ option and you can watch how it will print in adductive layers).

Week 5

These images are of the development I went through to make the hole on the ring bigger so that it would have greater potential for my laser cut file to fit though as I am really hoping that this print works and my sizing and tolerances are very accurate.

This is the test I did to check the thickness of the hole compared to the solid design where my measurements are accurate whereas MeshMixer isn’t as accurate. These images below are of the comparison I did;

I placed the solid design next to the design with holes next to each other on cure to visually compare as I have exported them from Sketchup I couldn’t check them with measurements. However this visual comparison allowed me to see that the hole size on the circul design is slightly smaller then the solid design.

When trying to combine my laser cut design with the 3D printed object I found the hole was way to small with my 2mm extension from the original design. It has taken along time to get this to this stage in my printing, to be able to understand how the 3D printer works and to manipulate it to produce what I am wanting it to. It has taken a large amount of trials, reflections, developments, re-tests and time to be able to get it to where it is now. Although this one will not be my final because its not working as I want it to as the hole is to small I am happy with the development I have been through. It is a bit disappointing for me to see it at this stage, having come this far in the class and really enjoying it to not be able to produce a functional final design a day before presentation makes me very frustrated but I have learnt a lot and I am really hoping it works. I am going to find a way to check the hole size before I print it tomorrow. I am hoping with anticipation that it works tomorrow.

These are the laser cuts I completed. I did multiple prints of different thicknesses as I wanted to test how I could manipulate the laser cutter to cut fine detail from my 3mm Acrylic. I designed my illustrator file to have a carving of a image of both a tree and a rose while my others have birds and grass, I chose these designs as they relate to my first moodboard of nature. My 3D prints also have the holes design which also relates to the naturalistic/ organic moodboard from week 1. I trailed this with many thicknesses and sizes as I had to change the thickness of my 3D print ring file as it wasn’t printing before because it was too thin. Making the design 2mm larger then the original design. Because I use Meshmixer to make the circle pattern I can’t measure the thickness and because my laser cut files are based off the original SketchUp file which means that the hole size for the ring is now smaller by a few mm which is why I have done a few different cuts as I wanted to make the most out of the cutting time as this is all I have before the hand in tomorrow. I found that the 3mm thickness of the acrylic was too think itself and wouldn’t fit in the hole, so I then tried the same cut with 2mm acrylic as this would be better suited for my hole size. I found when making the thickness thinner on the acrylic that it was harder to remove from the acrylic sheet as it would cut and melt back together. I then went onto combining my cuttings with the 3d printer.

 

Week 5

I then re-printed the trial again and set the printer settings so they would be more effective for PLA plastics, as I think the reason why it wasn’t working is still because of my settings were still on the Ninjaflex settings. However these were changed and I then printed again as shown in these photos below;

I found that this trial was a lot better aesthetically and was actually a solid component. I then went onto laser cutting and cut these files to combine with this 3D print.

Week 5

After identifying why my last print didn’t work I then made the appropriate changes as stated last time and re-rinted it;

I started to print this trial then realised that it was printing exactly as it was on the first two trials for this day. I stopped the trial and asked for help because it would end as the others have as the raft remains large.

Week 5

After reviewing my last trial and understanding it didn’t print because of the settings being for the wrong printer I then printed the same file in the Ultimaker 2, as it was set up for. These images below are of this trial;

Unfortunately this trial also didn’t work which means, after reflecting on it I was able to determine that it wasn’t because of the type of printer I used, instead it is the file. I had a problem with the raft when printing this file. I also had the problem of it printing all of the rings at the same time, even though I programmed it to print once at a time. I wasn’t sure why this was happening which is when I asked my tutor for advice as this was the second time it was happening. He told me it was because I need to import each file individually into Cura as this will make them print individually. I then went back to my SketchUp file and exported the STL of each ring individually and then made it have the holes effect on MeshMixer, imported that file into Netfabb to check it was able to be printed and then imported each ring file individually to Cura and saved it onto my SD card ready to print.
